How the One-Rep Max Estimate Works
Your one-rep max, or 1RM, is the heaviest weight you can move once with clean technique. Testing it directly is hard on the joints and nervous system, so most lifters estimate it from a lighter working set.
This is the Epley equation, one of the oldest and most widely used formulas in strength training. If you squat 80 kg for 8 reps, the estimate is 80 × (1 + 8 ÷ 30) = 101.3 kg. The result table then breaks that number down into working weights for every training goal.
Which Training Percentage Should You Use?

Maximal Strength
Low reps, heavy loads, long rests. Builds raw strength and improves how efficiently your nervous system recruits muscle.
Muscle Growth
Moderate loads in the 6 to 12 rep range. The classic hypertrophy zone for building muscle size.
Endurance & Skill
Higher reps, lighter weight. Great for muscular endurance, technique practice, warm-ups and deload weeks.
How to Get a More Reliable Estimate
- Use a set close to failure. A comfortable warm-up set will underestimate your true max.
- Stay in the 1 to 10 rep range. Above that, fatigue starts to distort the math more than raw strength does.
- Count only clean reps. Full range of motion, no bouncing, no help from a spotter.
- Stick to compound lifts. Squat, bench, deadlift and overhead press give the most dependable estimates.
- Re-check every 4 to 8 weeks. As you get stronger, the numbers shift, so update your working weights.

What does 1RM mean?
1RM stands for one-repetition maximum. It is the heaviest load you can move for a single clean rep of an exercise. Lifters use it to set training intensities as percentages of that number.
How is one-rep max calculated?
The FitNova360 calculator uses the Epley equation: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). You enter a set you have already performed, and the tool estimates the max you could lift once.
Which rep range gives the best estimate?
Sets between 1 and 10 reps give the most dependable estimate. Above roughly 12 reps, factors like fatigue, breathing and grip strength start to skew the number.
Does the estimate work for every exercise?
The math is the same, but accuracy is highest for big compound lifts such as the squat, bench press, deadlift and overhead press. Isolation and bodyweight movements should be treated as rough guides.
What percentage of my max should I train at?
As a general rule, 85 to 100 percent builds maximal strength, 65 to 85 percent is best for muscle growth, and under 65 percent works well for endurance, technique work and warm-ups.
Do I need to test a true max?
No. A calculated estimate avoids the injury risk of a genuine maximal attempt. If you do test, warm up properly and always use a spotter or safety pins.
