Tulane University study (April 11, 2018)
A study conducted at Tulane University, reported in the Journal ofPsychology Research & Behavior Management, discovered that “yoga/mindfulness in school could be beneficial in assisting anxious third-grade children in managing anxiety in order to improve their emotional health and wellness.” The children in the study came from a population that already exhibited anxiety symptoms.
Researchers worked with a public school in New Orleans and added yoga and mindfulness to the school’s existing support program. The third-grade students were divided into two groups. One group (32 students) received normal care, which included counseling and activities guided by the school social worker. The second group (20 students) joined an 8-week program using the Yoga Ed curriculum, where they attended small yoga and mindfulness sessions at the beginning of the school day.
During these sessions, students practiced simple breathing exercises, guided relaxation, and traditional yoga poses that were suitable for children. To measure the results, researchers checked the students’ life satisfaction and emotional well-being using two well-known research tools. These checks were done at the beginning, middle, and end of the intervention.
At the end of the study, students who participated in yoga and mindfulness showed better emotional and psychosocial quality of life compared to those who only received standard care. Teachers also reported positive changes and said they started using yoga more often in the classroom after learning about it.
