What is the difference between loneliness and being alone?

Loneliness is an emotion that people experience when they feel they lack something important within them. In contrast, being alone is simply a state of being, not a feeling. You could be by yourself and still feel peaceful and content. At the same time, you could be surrounded by others and still feel empty or disconnected. So, becoming comfortable with being alone starts with understanding this difference.
